Ceilings

Ceilings is a meditation on aspiration and its limits. These paintings capture the elaborate Baroque ceilings that once decorated the palaces of European nobility—surfaces designed to inspire awe and direct the gaze heavenward toward implied divine realms.

Rendered with painstaking attention to architectural detail, gilded ornament, and the illusionistic frescoes that populate these spaces, each work in the series presents a ceiling as both historical artifact and conceptual space. The grandeur is undeniable, yet there is an emptiness in these ornate vaults—a reminder that such spaces were built to project power and permanence, ideals that history has repeatedly undermined.

Through the Ceilings series, Fikl invites viewers to look up, as aristocrats once did, but with contemporary eyes that recognize both the beauty of these artistic achievements and the fragility of the social orders that produced them.
