The End of History

The End of History is Gheorghe Fikl’s most provocative and confrontational series. Raw animal carcasses—suspended, splayed, or arranged as if in a butcher’s display—occupy the same palatial Baroque interiors that appear throughout his work. The juxtaposition is deliberate and unsettling: the visceral reality of flesh and bone invades spaces designed to celebrate refinement and transcendence.

The title references Francis Fukuyama’s controversial thesis about the triumph of liberal democracy, but Fikl’s paintings suggest a darker reading. If history has ended, what remains is not utopia but an ornamental shell concealing fundamental violence. The opulent settings—with their frescoed ceilings, marble columns, and damask wallpaper—become complicit in a kind of aesthetic violence, their beauty rendered hollow by the presence of death.

Working with the technical precision of Old Master still life painting, Fikl forces viewers to confront uncomfortable truths about consumption, power, and the costs of civilization. These are not easy paintings to witness, and that is precisely their point.
